لما طلعت على كتاب لطيف في معرفة الأوائل للإمام الحبر الهمام والعالم المتقن الفهام أستاذ المتآخرين، خاتم المجتهدين جلال الملة والدين عبد الرحمن السيوطي تغمده الله برحمته، جعلت كتابي هذا ولخصته من كتابه المذكور، وحذفت أسانيد الأخبار والزوائد والتكرار وأسماء الكتب المنقول عنها، بناء على الأصل وتسهيلاً للضبط والنقل، وزدت في كتابي هذا من الأخبار والآثار من متعلقات الأوائل والأواخر أصنافاً مما استخرجته من الكتب المعتبرة من محاضرات التواريخ، كتحفة الألباب، وتاريخ الخلفاء، وسير الملوك، وكنز الأسرار، ومسالك الممالك، وبهجة التواريخ، وتاريخ الحكماء والفقهاء والنحاة، وأصول التواريخ، وتاريخ الجوهر الثمين في الخلفاء الراشدين، وكتاب المحاضرة في أخبار مصر والقاهرة، وكتاب مزهر اللغة، وغيرها من الكتب المتداولة بين الفضلاء والعلماء رحمة الله عليهم أجمعين. ورتبته على قسمين: الأول في الأوائل، والآخر في الأواخر. وفي كل قسم فصول ترتيباً لطيفاً وتبويباً منيفاً مراعياً أوائل ألفاظ الأخبار في أوائل الأسطر ما أخال أحداً سبقني إليه، وذيلت في آخر كتابي من أواخر الأخبار من انواع المحاضرات من التواريخ مما لم يودع في غيره من كتب الأوائل كالسيوطي والعسكري وغيرهما من اجلة الأئمة.
