تنطوي هذه الدراسة "الجالية البريطانية في مصر" على أهمية خاصة، فقد اعتدنا في دراساتنا أن نولي إهتماماً خاصاً لتاريخ الحركة الوطنية والسياسية الممثلة في مقاومة الإحتلال البريطاني، ولم نولي اهتماماً لوضع الإنجليز أو الجالية البريطانية في مصر، قبل الإحتلال وبعده، وهذا ما قامت به المؤلفة ناهد السيد زيان التي انشغلت بالموضوع وتحمست لمناقشة إشكاليته التي تمثلت في البحث عن تاريخ هذه الجالية وإزالة الغموض حول أهمية دورها في تاريخ مصر الحديث. وقد عكفت على إبراز هذا الدور في إطاره التاريخي، ومن كل الجوانب، بشمول وعمق، بعيداً عن التعميمات والأحكام المتضاربة. ونجحت في أن تقدم لنا من خلال تمهيد وستة فصول معالجة تاريخية جادة ورصينة لأوضاع هذه الجالية منذ النصف الثاني من القرن الثامن عشر وحتى الإحتلال البريطاني لمصر عام 1882، فدرست أسباب توافد الإنجليز إلى مصر التي كانت ذات جاذبية خاصة لهم، وتناولت كذلك النشاط السياسي المبكر لهذه الجالية، قبل الإحتلال، ثم قدمت معرفة علمية موثقة عن النشاط الإقتصادي والمالي للجالية ومساهماتها في الإدارة وتحديث المدن والمواصلات ووسائل الإتصال ونحوها، بالإضافة إلى نشاط الجالية في ميادين التعليم والثقافة. واختتمت المؤلفة دراستها بتسليط الضوء على نشاط الجالية الإجتماعي، وعلاقتها بالوطنيين وبغيرهم. المهم أنها لم تترك شاردة أو واردة في شأن الجالية البريطانية إلا أحصتها وأخضعتها لمجهر البحث العلمي والدراسة الأكاديمية، لتجلو لنا صورة من تاريخ هذا "الآخر" الذي عاش في وطننا واحتلت دولته بلادنا ردحاً من الزمن.
