إن العقود الستة من إنخراطي في الحياة العامة شهدت أحداثًا مرحلية، ووطنية، وإقليمية، وعالمية، كنت شاهدًا عليها. وقد انفعلت بها من ناحية، وتقاطعت هي مع مسيرة حياتي من ناحية أخرى. وشجعني كثيرون على الحديث عنها من منظوري الشخصي، وهو ما حاولته في هذه المذكرات فأرجو أن تكون إضافة، ولو متواضعة، تسهم في فهم التاريخ الإجتماعي لمصر والوطن العربي منذ منتصف العشرين إلى أوائل القرن الحادي والعشرين، لقد كنت محظوظاً أنني إلتقيت وجهاً لوجه كل رؤساء مصر- جمال عبد الناصر، وأنور السادات، وحسني مبارك، ومحمد مرسي، كما إلتقيت عدداً من الرؤساء والملوك العرب. مثل الملك فيصل، والملك حسين والملك الحسن الثاني، والرئيس العراقي صدام حسين والرئيس السوري حافظ الأسد. والرئيس السوداني جعفر نميري، واللبناني بشير الجمل، والرئيسين الفلسطينين ياسر عرفات، ومحمود عباس وحاكم قطر الشيخ حمد بن خليفة آل ثاني وزوجته المتميزة الشيخة موزة بنت ناصر المسند والزعيم الليبي معمر القذافي (الذي ساجلته لمدة ساعة على قناة الجزيرة عام 1995).
