سميت هذا النص الذي أنشأته في مدح الرسول الكريم صلى الله عليه وسلم "كافلة الدرة اليتيمة" تلويحاً بكونه معارضة لقصيدة البردة التي كتبها البوصيري المعروفة بـ"الدرة اليتيمة" وبـ"الكواكب الدرية في مدح خير البرية" واشتهرت بين الناس باسم "البردة" تأسياً بالبردة التي ألقاها الرسول الكريم صلى الله عليه وسلم على كعب بن زهير لما تلا عليه اعتذاريته اللامية "بانت سعاد".
والبردة أشهر نص في "المديح النبوي" في الثقافة العربية الإسلامية. لكنه خارج مؤسسة المدح المألوفة بين مادح آمل مكتسب وممدوح مانح متفضل رغم أن هذه المؤسسة المدحية قد شكلت دعامة للأدب عموماً تشهد بها المدونة العربية. ووجه خروج البردة عن هذه الدائرة خلوها من الطابع النفعي المادي إذ قالها البوصيري بعد موت الرسول صلى الله عليه وسلم بقرون وبذلك خلت من التملق والتزلق والتكسب.
