هذه الدراسة موجزة مهد بها المؤلف لمن أراد البحث التفصيلي في علم الكلام وقضاياه، وقد اختار لها أهم القضايا التي ثار حولها الجدل التاريخي الذي امتلأت به صفحات المصادر الأولى لهذا العلم خاصة تلك الكتب التي ألفها أئمة المذاهب الكبرى (كالمعتزلة والأشاعرة والماتريدية والشيعة والخوارج) حول القضايا الكبرى في هذا العلم.
وقد أراد المؤلف من هذه الدراسة أن يلفت الانتباه إلى أن الخلاف في الوسائل لا يعني الخلاف في المقاصد والغايات، وأن علم الكلام يفرض على المشتغلين به أن يكونوا أمناء على وظيفتهم التي تأسس من أجلها، وهي الدفاع عن العقيدة الإسلامية بالبراهين العقلية، وقد قام القدماء بهذه المهمة حسب استطاعتهم، وتناولوا مشكلات عصرهم بما تيسر لهم من مناهج عقلية فندوا بها دعاوي الخصوم وأبطلوا حجج المعارضين لهم، ونحن اليوم أحوج ما نكون إلى استحضار تلك الروح التي عالج بها القدماء قضاياهم وعالجوا بها مشكلاتهم، لننهض بوظيفة علم الكلام كما نهضوا هم بها فنتناول مشكلات عصرنا نحن، وقضايا نحن- وهي كثيرة ومتشعبة- ونعالجها بمنهج العصر ومنطلق العصر.
