كَتَبَ تروتسكي هذه السيرة عن نفسه من منفاه في تركيا، يتمتَّع هذا الكتاب بقيمةٍ أدبية رفيعة لما يتناوله من حياةِ ثوريٍّ برز اسمه في صدارة الكثير من الأحداث التاريخية التي غيَّرَت وجه العالم في عصره. ويتميَّز كذلك بأسلوبٍ أدبي ممتع، ليس فقط لأن هذه سيرةٌ ذاتية هي بطبيعة الحال ضربٌ من ضروب الأدب، بل أيضًا لأن هكذا أسلوب هو ما اعتاد المؤلف الكتابة به في أغلب أعماله –التاريخية والسجالية على الأقل. نجد بين طيَّات هذا الكتاب الكثير من السرد التاريخي، والشروح الفلسفية، والرؤى والتصوُّرات الشخصية والسياسية، والسجالات النظرية التي لا يخلو بعضها من حِدَّة. لكنه يظل مع ذلك كتاب سيرة ذاتية، إذ كانت هذه العناصر مُكوِّناتٍ رئيسية لحياة المؤلف الشخصية الواعية حتى اغتياله عام 1940 على يد أحد عملاء الستالينية في المكسيك.
رغم الحجم الكبير له، كان من الممكن أن يُصدِر المؤلف كتابه بحجمٍ أكبر بكثير ربما يصل إلى الضِعف، فما أكثر المواضع التي يختم فيها تروتسكي قوله بأن “المجال لا يتسع هنا لذلك وسأخصِّص كتابًا آخر لهذا الأمر”. عمدتُ إلى إدخال الكثير من الهوامش الإضافية مُرفَقَةً ببعض الإشارات الأدبية والسياسية والأحداث التاريخية التي كان مُتعارَف عليها في عصر الكاتب والتي ربما طواها الزمن، سعيًا لتقديم أوضح صورة قدر الإمكان لحياة المؤلف والسياق السياسي والتاريخي الذي عاش فيه.
ونظرًا للسنوات الإحدى عشرة الفاصلة بين هذه السيرة الذاتية واغتيال المؤلف (من 1929 إلى 1940)، بما اشتملت عليه تلك الفترة من أحداثٍ ثريةٍ بالسياقات والتفاصيل في حياة تروتسكي، أرفقت كذلك مُلحقًا في نهاية الكتاب هو في الأصل ترجمة عربية لمقدمةٍ مكتوبة للنسخة الإنجليزية من الكتاب، كَتَبَها في أكتوبر 1969 الشيوعي الأمريكي جوزيف هانسن، أحد أفراد طاقم السكرتارية الخاص بالمؤلف في المكسيك من 1937 إلى 1940. لعل هذا المُلحَق يسهم في رسم صورة لجانبٍ من حياة المؤلف في ما بعد إصدار سيرته.
