يُقدم هذا الكتاب مقدمة شاملة عن الجهاد في التاريخ الإسلامي مسترشداً بأبرز الأحداث التاريخية التي ساهمت فعلياً في تَشكّل وتطور عقيدة الجهاد عند المسلمين، ولاسيما أن معظم تجليات هذه العقيدة في الماضي لا تنفصل عن النقاشات المعاصرة حول الإسلام؛ لذلك يُؤكد مؤلِّفه أن مفهوم الجهاد لم يتوقف مطلقاً عن التطور عبر الماضي، مما جعله شديد التعقيد ومتملصاً من كل سعي إلى حصره. فالمتغيرات التاريخية وتعدد التأويلات المذهبية والتكييف اللحظي لهذا المفهوم مع محيطه الآني، كلها عوامل جعلت مسألة الجهاد طيِّعة ميدانياً وعصيِّة فكرياً لأن تحققها في الميدان يرتكز على التفاعل الاستطرادي مع تراث السلف والمعطيات الآنية (صراعات القوة والفكر والتطلع إلى إثبات الذات وغيرها) التي فرضها الوضع الاجتماعي من جهة، ومن جهة ثانية لأن تحققها الفكري غامض المرجعيات والمرتكزات الفكرية؛ غموض دفع الُمؤَلِّف إلى الحديث عن «أصول الجهاد» عوض «أصل الجهاد» متجاوزاً الإشارة القرآنية الصريحة إلى الجهاد، بل غير مقيد نفسه بها، وزاعماً أن ماضي المجتمع الإسلامي يزخر بالنصوص المؤسسة والمنظمة لعقيدة الجهاد، ومن ثمة «أصول الجهاد»؛ فهو يزعم وجود تجليات الجهاد في شبه الجزيرة العربية حتى قبل مجيء الإسلام.
