من أين جاءت فكرة الشيوعية، وما هي الأسباب التي جعلت منها عنصراً حاسماً في صياغة القرن العشرين؟ وما هي العوامل التي أنزلت بالشيوعية هزيمة هائلة؟ وهل الشيوعية مجرّد يوتوبيا قالت بها عقول مريضة، أم أنها نزوع إنساني أصيل إلى الحرية والمساواة وتجاوز الإغتراب في أشكاله كلها؟ وهل الشمولية صفة داخلية حايثت الماركسية أم أنها نتيجة لإرادوية متحزّبة، اختزلت النظرية إلى الحزب، واختزلت المجتمع إلى النظرية المتحزّبة، واختزلت النظرية والحزب إلى إرادة قيادية، تستبدل بالحركة الاجتماعية مقولات أيديولوجية جامدة، تعتقل الحياة والنظرية في آن؟
يحاول هذا الكتاب، الذي كتبه مؤرّخ فرنسي مرموق، هو أحد أبرز المؤرخين في أوروبا اليوم، أن يجيب عن الأسئلة السابقة، مؤكداً أمرين، يقول أولهما: إن الشيوعية فكرة حداثية، لا تنفصل عن الأفكار التي جاءت بها الأزمنة الحديثة. ويقول الأمر الثاني: لم تهزم الرأسمالية الشيوعية، إنما هزمت الديمقراطية الشمولية، بقدر ما هزمت السياسة الاستبداد، لأن الأخير، مهما طال عمره، لا يستطيع الصمود أمام تناقضات الحياة الاجتماعية المتجدّدة.
ربما يكون هذا الكتاب ما يفيد مَنْ تبقّى من الشيوعيين، وما يضيء درب هؤلاء، الذين يعتقدون أن الماركسية بحثٌ في الديمقراطية، وأنّ ماركسية لا تقوم على حرية الفكر والمبادرة والمساءلة، هي مجرّد حكاية أخلاقية قديمة، تفتن العقول التي لا تعرف عن الأزمنة الحديثة شيئاً.
