تعتبر المهداوية واحدة من المعتقدات التي واجهت ولا تزال تواجه الكثير من ضروب الإنتقاد والتهوين وهما غايمة الإنكار، حيث لا يتكلف المنكر لها من الجهد لا يراد الأجود في الأدلة المخالفة لهذا الإعتقاد، ولا حتى يملك الحد الأدنى من التحقيق فيما جاد به المنقول من مستغيض الأخبار أو عالجه المعقول في مقام الثبوت والإثبات حتى بات هذا المعتقد واحداً من العقائد التي يتبادر إلى أهل الحجاج المغالط، أنها ثغر متاح لكل من شاء أن يهز الصرح العقائدي الديني عموماً أو الإمامي خصوصاً، ولم يجدوا لهم ملاذاً في دفعها أورد السنن المتحدثة عنها سوى أن توسلوا مجملاً بدعوى مناقضتها لروح العلم ومنطق الأشياء وصولة البرهان؛ ويكاد القوم يضعون في الأعين غشاوة والآذان وقراً، حتى لا يبلغ الخوض في المهدوية مداه، وأن الرافضين حصروها في ورود المسيح بديلاً، حتى لا يقولوا بما تواثرت به الأخبار من أمر مهدي الأمة.
ومع تكاثر الروايات المخبرة عن حدوث الأمرين معاً دون تزاحم إلا أن البعض حاول أن يلبس هذا بذاك حتى قال بعضهم لا مهدي إلا عيسى. هذا وما دام الأمر مؤكداً في المنقول، أصبح من الضروري التسليم به ما لم يرد ما يخدش في قطعية صدوره كما لا يخفى. وحيث أجمعت الأمة على أن مصادر اعتقادها هي القرآن والسنة والإجماع دليل العقل في خلاف في الجملة حول ما إذا كان العقل يستقل بأحكامه أم أنه يدور مدار السمع وجوداً وعدماً؛ فإن استناد المهدوية على قطعي الصدور يجعلها ثانية حسّاً لا حدساً خلاف للمنكر.
في هذه المناخات يأتي هذا الكتاب الذي يتناول بالدراسة والتحليل معتقد المهدي المنتظر ومن ثم فلسفة غيبته وقيمة ظهوره.
