تأتي أهمية هذا الكتاب من جهات عدة، منها: قلة المؤلفات التي وُضعت في تاريخ حضر موت عبر الأدوار التاريخية، ومنها: قلة المؤرِّخين الحضارم خصوصاً واليمنيين عموماً، ومنها: أنه كُتب في حقبة مبكّرة في نهاية القرن الثامن الهجري وأول التاسع، فمؤلِّفه هو المؤرِّخ العلاّمة عبد الرحمن بن علي بن حسّان الشبامي (ت 818هـ)، الذي يكاد يكون الوحيد في عصره الذي تصدّى لكتابة تاريخ إقليمه، ولم يسبقه إلى ذلك أحدٌ فيما نعلم.
ويختلف تاريخ ابن حسّان إختلافاً تامّاً عن نمط التواريخ المنقبية التي جاءت بعده، إذ تميز بكون مادته تأريخيةً بحقّ، ترصد الوقائع والأحداث والتراجم والوفيات.
ولم يكن لإبن حسّان غالباً سَلَفٌ من مؤرِّخي الحضارم يستقي مادته منهم، والمرجَّح أنه استمدّ من مدوِّنات محلية توفرت له، كما استمدّ بعض وفياته من شواهد قبور أصحابها، بالإضافة إلى مصادر تاريخية عامة وأخرى نجهلها.
وفي كل هذه الجوانب من الفرادة ما تجعل هذا التاريخ أهمّ وأقدم تاريخ حضرميّ يُنشَر حتى يومنا هذا
