والتربية هي عملية إقتصادية لها نفقاتها، وكلفتها، ولها مردودها الإقتصادي من خلال الإستفادة من رؤوس الأموال البشرية، بعد إعدادها وتأهيلها.
وتؤدي عملية التربية والتعليم دوراً كبيراً في رقي الأمم وتقدمها، إذ أنه يقاس تطور دولة ما، بمدى تطور إقتصادها، وبمدى ما أحرز مواطنيها من تعليم وثقافة.
ولقد أكدت العديد من الدراسات والأدبيات في مجال الإقتصاد والتربية بأن هناك علاقة وثيقة بين التربية والإقتصاد، فكلاهما يؤثر في الآخر ويتأثر به، فالإقتصاد يوفر للتربية ما تحتاج إليه من موارد مادية، والتربية تقدم للإقتصاد الموارد البشرية المؤهلة القادرة على الإنتاج بكفاءة عالية لسد حاجة السوق، ولذلك نجد أن الدول صارت تربط السياسات التعليمية بعملية الإقتصاد والتنمية الإقتصادية.
ويتناول هذا الكتاب في فصوله الأربعة الأولي، التنمية الإقتصادية والبشرية، ومفهوم إقتصاديات التعليم وتطوره، وتكلفة التعليم، والفاقد التعليمي، والعائد من التعليم، بينما يتناول الفصل الخامس التخطيط التربوي والتخطيط الإستراتيجي، ويربط الفصل السادس إقتصاديات التعليم وتخطيطه بالجودة الشاملة.
