عبد الله بن محمد بن عُبيد بن سفيان بن قيس، الأموي،أبو بكر بن أبي الدنيا البغدادي (208/281)هجري، من موالي بني أمية،الحافظ، المحدث، صاحب التصانيف المشهورة المفيدة، كان مؤدب أولاد الخلفاء. وكان من الوعاظ العارفين بأساليب الكلام وما يلائم طبائع الناس، إن شاء أضحك جليسه، وإن شاء أبكاه. وثقه أبو حاتم وغيره. صنّف الكثير حتى بلغت مصنفاته 164 مصنفاً منها: العظمة؛ الصمت؛ اليقين؛ ذم الدنيا؛ الشكر؛ الفرج بعد عبد الله بن محمد بن عُبيد بن سفيان بن قيس، الأموي،أبو بكر بن أبي الدنيا البغدادي (208/281)هجري، من موالي بني أمية،الحافظ، المحدث، صاحب التصانيف المشهورة المفيدة، كان مؤدب أولاد الخلفاء. وكان من الوعاظ العارفين بأساليب الكلام وما يلائم طبائع الناس، إن شاء أضحك جليسه، وإن شاء أبكاه. وثقه أبو حاتم وغيره. صنّف الكثير حتى بلغت مصنفاته 164 مصنفاً منها: العظمة؛ الصمت؛ اليقين؛ ذم الدنيا؛ الشكر؛ الفرج بعد الشدة وغيرها. مولده ووفاته ببغداد.
قال عنه الحافظ ابن كثير - رحمه الله - في البداية والنهاية: " المشهور بالتصانيف الكثيرة، النافعة، الشائعة، الذائعة في الرقائق وغيرها، وكان صدوقاً، حافظاً، ذا مروءة ".

هذا الكتاب يعالج قضية خطيرة ألا وهي قضية" العقل "في الرؤية الإسلامية.
يعرض صوراً مشرقة لتوجيهات الأئمة في القرون الثلاثة الأولى.
يضع المؤلف العقل في الذروة من الملكات والطاقات بعد معرفة الله سبحانه وتعالى.
ذكر أن الناس تتفاضل بالعقول، كما أن الأشجار تتفاضل بالثمار.
ذكر أن العقل عقلان؛ عقل طبيعة، وعقل تجارب.
ذكر النصوص التربوبية التى تعالج قدح زناد الفكر، وتعمل على نضوج العقل وتطويره وإثرائه.
ذكر الوسائل التى تشوش العقل وترديه، وتهبط به، فانبرى للتنبيه عليها، وحذر من أصحابها.
وهو بهذا يدافع عن المحدثين ضد الفرية التى تقول بأنهم أهملوا العقل ولم يعنوا به العناية الوافية.
وهو في هذا وغيره يذكر الأدلة التي توضح رأيه وما يذكره
