لقد انطلق النحاة في نظرتهم إلى المادة اللغوية من فكرة الأص والفرع، فهي حاضرة منذ بواكير الدرس النحوي، ولأزمته في مراحل: الجمع، والتصنيف، والتحليل، حتى غدت مفهوماً ذهنياً تُحال إليه اغلب جزئيات هذا الدرس، إذ يوجه النحاة بوساطة الأصل والفرع مسائل الأبواب، فيحيلون بعض المسائل على بعض، ويرجحون بعضها على بعض، مستعينين بالتعليل، والتأويل، والإنحطاط وغير ذلك من الآليات المعروفة في معالجة قضايا النحو.
وقد وقع الإختيار في هذه الدراسة على واحد من كتب النحو المهمة وهو شرح الرضي الإستبراباذي ات 688هـ على كافية ابن الحاجب، ليكون ميداناً للبحث في الأصل والفرع، ومنطلقاً يمكن من خلاله الولوج في بطون الكتب النحوية وخوض غمارها: ليتسنى الكشف عن الأصل والفرع في الدرس النحوي ومن ثم الوقوف على خصوصية الرضي وسمّته في عرض المسائل النحوية على هدي نظرية الأصل والفرع.
وفي ما يخص منهج الكتاب، فإني اعتمدت منهجاً قوامه الوصف والتحليل والموازنة بين النصوص المعنية بفكرة الأصل والفرع عند الرضي، ثم تتبعتها عند النحاة إبتداءً من سيبويه حتى عصر الرَّضي، وأفدتُ من آراء النحاة المعاصرين له والمتأخرين عنه، ولا سيما شراح الكافية، وتخلل ذلك الوقوف على آراء المحملين وتوجيهاتهم المعنية بالأصل والفرع، حتى تمخَّضت خطة هذا الكتاب عن تمهيد وثلاثة فصول تتلوهن خاتمة.
