يتألف هذا الكتاب من 54 فصل في مختلف الأقسام والمجالات المعنية بسؤال الوعي. وهو الطبعة الثانية لنسخة تحمل نفس الاسم (Blackwell Companion To Consciousness) صدرت عام 2007 إلا أنّ هذه النسخة التي بين أيدينا قد زِيدَ فيها 18 فصلاً جديداً مع إعادة تحديث وتنقيح جميع الفصول السابقة. كما أنّ ما يميز محتوى هذا الكتاب هو أنّ جميع هذه الفصول الـ 54 تمّت كتابتها من قبل خبراء مختصين وبارزين في دراسة الوعي من مختلف المجالات حيث شارك في تأليفه أكثر من 66 مؤلِّف من اختصاصات مختلفة، كما قد حظيت جميع هذه الفصول بمراجعة الأقران وتحكيم اعتمد على عدم التعيين لضمان الحيادية. كما أنّ المحررينّ ماكس فيلمانز وسوزان شنايدر من المتخصصين في دراسة الوعي ولهم كتب كثيرة عُنيت بالوعي وبفلسفة العقل. ونظراً لما تضمَّنه هذا الكتاب من تنوّع وعُمق وأصالة وحداثة وأهمية، فقد واجهنا صعوبة كبيرة في الإشارة إلى أيٍ من موضوعاته هاهنا، لكن يمكن أن نقول بإيجاز، إنّ هذا الكتاب يمثِّل كل ما يحتاجه وسيحتاجه الباحث الجاد بشأن سؤال الوعي الآن وفيما بعد...
