"مختار الحكم ومحاسن الكلم" لأبي الوفاء المبشر بن فاتك الآمري هو أول كتاب عربي في تاريخ الفلسفة استقصى فيه صاحبه أخبار الفلاسفة وتلاها بنبذ من أقوالهم تدخل في باب الحكم القصار والأمثال.
فالفصل الذي عقده ابن النديم في "الفهرست" عن "أخبار الفلاسفة والعلوم القديمة والكتب المصنفة في ذلك" إنما اقتصر على حديث قصير عن حياة الفيلسوف واهتم اهتماماً خاصاً بمؤلفاته وشروحها وما ترجم منها إلى السريانية والعربية، حديث يتسم بالدقة وتحرى الوقائع التاريخية، مما يجعل قيمته التاريخية العلمية أكبر من قيمة كتابنا هذا. ولكن "مختار الحكم" يمتاز عنه بتوسعه في إيراد الأخبار والحكايات عن هؤلاء الفلاسفة والحكماء الذين يترجم لهم، وبأنه أورد تلك النصوص التي كانت في نظره الغرض الأساسي من تأليف كتابه هذا، كما كان إيراد البيان عن المؤلفات والشروح والترجمات الهدف الأصلي من فصل ابن النديم. على أنه يلاحظ من مقارنة الترجمات المتناظرة بين ابن النديم والمبشر بن فاتك أن هذا الأخير لم ينقل عن "الفهرست" شيئاً وليس من ثمة تشابه بين الكتابين، على أن الأشخاص المشتركين بين الكتابين لا يتجاوزون: فيثاغورس، وسقراط، وأفلاطون، وأرسطوطاليس، ومن هنا لا نستطيع أن تعد "الفهرست" لابن النديم من مصادر كتابنا هذا.
وما من شك في أن كتاب "مختار الحكم" هو أوفى كتاب في العربية استقصى أقوال الفلاسفة والحكماء. فمادته تزيد عشرات المرات عما ورد في نظائره: مثل "جاويدان خرد" لمسكويه. و"الكلم الروحانية في الحكم اليونانية" لأبي الفرج بن هندو.
