تذخر العديد من المعاجم والمؤلفات وكتب التراث بكثير من الألفاظ والمصطلحات في مختلف حقول المعرفة، ومنها هذا المعجم الخاص بالأساطير والخرافات الجاهلية لمؤلفه الدكتور قصي الشيخ عسكر، قدم له بمقدمة عن نشأة الأسطورة بين الأمم منذ فترة ما قبل الإسلام مروراً بعصر صدر الإسلام والأموي والعباسي وحتى عصرنا الحالي.
يقول المؤلف "إن إيحاءات بعض الأساطير العالمية والعربية امتدت إلى وقتنا الحاضر كأننا نخلد فيها ماضينا العريق" وعليه، جمع المؤلف في هذا المعجم جملة من أساطير وقصص وأمثال وحكايات وصنف منها ما يختص بمصطلحات الأساطير والخرافات، ورتبه ترتيباً ألفبائياً، مع شرح المعاني كل مصطلح وتاريخه ومصدره.
ومن هذا المعجم نقتبس بعض الألفاظ: "الأحرف العربية: أبجد، هوز، حطي، كلمن... هي أسماء ملوك، وقد ورثت أحدهم نبته وهي خالقة بنت كلمون - المصدر - المنتظم 1/ 325"، "أحاديث الخلق: الخرافات المفتعلة وأشباهها - المصدر - معاني القرآن الكريم 2/ 281"، "السها: كوكب ملاصق لنعش بنات نعش يمتحن فيه العرب أبصارهم فكانوا ينظرون إليه ويقولو: أعوذ بربّ السهية من كل عقرب وحية يأمن ليلته - المصدر - عجائب المخلوقات ص 23.
