بين يدي القارئ "مفردة يعقوب" لابن الفحام تظهر العالم المطبوعات بعد أن كانت قابعة في عالم المخطوطات، بل ويُظَن أنها كانت في عالم المفقودات، فالحمد لله رب العالمين على فضله أن جعلنا نعثر عليها، بل وعثرنا على نسختين خطيتين مختلفتين منها.
وكانت البداية بكتابة النسخة الأم ثم مقارنتها بأختها، ثم عرضناها على "النشر" وأظهرنا الفروق بين "النشر" و "المفردة" إن كان هناك فروق ليسهل العمل للمحررين، ثم عقدنا مقدمة للمفردة بينا فيها أهمية علم القراءات، وكتب أصول "النشر"، ثم عقدنا فصلاً بينا فيه معنى المفردة، وتاريخ المفردات، وأهمية مفردة يعقوب، ثم عقدنا فصلاً عرفنا فيه بالمؤلف وترجمنا له بما استطعنا الحصول عليه من معلومات عنه، ثم ترجمنا ليعقوب الإمام، ودافعنا عن قراءته بما تيسر ثم ترجمنا للرواة عنه وخصوصاً رويس وروح، أما الوليد فلم نظفر بترجمة واسعة له إلا في "غاية النهاية"، ولما كان طريقه قد انقطع رواية فلم نتوسع في الحديث عن روايته.
ثم عقدنا فصلاً خالصاً بالفروق بين رواية قالون ورواية يعقوب حيث جعل المؤلف رواية قانون طريق أبي نشيط أصلاً يرجع إليه عند عدم الحديث عن فرش أو أصل، ثم أوضحنا ما في "المفردة" من الأحرف التي اختلف فيها عن يعقوب من طريقي رويس وروح على ما ذكره في "النشر" في جداول ميسرة تسهل للقارئ القراءة بمضمن "المفردة".
ثم عقدنا فصلاً لبيان نسخ المخطوط ووصفها، وعملنا في التحقيق، وختمنا الكتاب بفهارس فنية توضح ما فيه من كنوز.
