يعد "الصلاح الصفدي" من أهم المؤرخين الذين تصدوا في القرن الثامن للتأليف في أسماء أمراء دمشق. فقد كان من مؤرخي دمشق المتقدمين، وكانت آثاره من مصادر تاريخ دمشق الكبير. ألف في تسمية الأمراء الدمشقيين معجماً صغيراً، ثم نظم أسماء الولاة في أرجوزة سماها "تحفة ذوي الألباب فيمن حكم بدمشق من الخلفاء والملوك النواب" ورتب الأمراء حسب تاريخ قدومهم دمشق. ثم شرح الأرجوزة شرحاً واسعاً ذكر فيه حوادث تاريخية شتى تتعلق بالولاة. وكانت فكرة التأليف من الولاة تنتقل عند الصفدي من خطوة ضيقة إلى خطوة أكثر سعة.
والمعجم الصغير الذي رتبه على حروف المعجم هو أول ما بدأ به، ويبدو أنه لم يرجع إليه لإتمامه لأن فيه نقصاً كبيراً، ثم نظم الأرجوزة، أول مرة مرتباً أسماء الولاة ترتيباً تاريخياً، فأضاف فيها ما أغفله في معجمه من الأسماء، فلما عمد إلى شرح الأرجوزة أعاد النظر في الأبيات المنظومة وفي ألفاظها، وأضاف إليها أبياتاً جديدة لم تكن في الأرجوزة عندما نظمها أول مرة. والجديد في عمل الصفدي هو إفراده المعجم لأمراء دمشق ومن دخلها من الملوك أولاً، ثم نظمه أسماء الولاة حسب تاريخ ولاياتهم، ولم يتعرض في الأرجوزة إلى زائري دمشق من الملوك والخلفاء.
وقد اعتمد الصفدي في تراجمه على الحفاظ العسكري، ولما كان الصلاح من أعظم الأعلام الذين تفخر بهم دمشق، وتحتاج آثاره إلى دراسات واسعة، فقد عني الدكتور "صلاح الدين المنجد" بإعادة نشر رسالته وأرجوزته في هذا الكتاب الذي نقلب صفحاته محققاً مضمونهما، وتجلى عمله، أولاً: مقابلة نصوص الرسالة على ما ورد في تاريخ دمشق لابن عساكر لأن أكثرها منقول عنه. ثانياً: إعادة ترتيب الأسماء على ترتيب المعجم. ثالثاً: أضاف أسماء الولاة التي غفل عنها الصفدي، رابعاً: تقسيم الأرجوزة إلى أقسام، خامساً تدوين مسرد عام واحد تضمن أسماء الولاة وتاريخ وفاتهم، ورغبة من المحقق في ضبط أسماء الولاة غير العربية، من تركية أو فارسية أو مغولية، فقد افرد ملحقاً خاصاً أثبت فيه اسم الوالي وضبطه بالحروف اللاتينية، وقد وضع هذا الملحق المستشرقان الأستاذان B.spuler O.pritsak وكلاهما مختص بالمغولية والفارسية والتركية.
