لقد قام أهل الحديث ورواته بحق هذا الشأن، فيما أودعوه في كتبهم في التعديل والتجريح، وفيما دونُوه في مؤلفاتهم الموسومة بالتواريخ. وأما الفقهاء فإنهم أضاعوه فضاع ما اختصوا بإدراكه من تفاوت مراتب أئمتهم في التحقيق واختلاف حظوظهم في العلم من التوفيق.
ولم أزل منذ زمن الحداثة ذا عناية بهذا الشأن، أتطلبه من مظانه وغير مظانه، وأصيد أوابده، وأقيد شوارده، وأتتبعه مما صنفه أهل الحديث في تواريخ أمهات الأمصار شرقاً وغرباً، المشتملة على التعريف بخواص أهليها ووارديها، ومن معاجم كثيرة في أسماء شيوخهم، وفهارس وتخاريج لهم قليلة، ومن مؤلفات في ذكر الفقهاء، ألفها شرذمة قليلة من الفقهاء.
وهي قليلة، قليلة المضمون والمحصول، غير قليل ما فيها مما لا يصح أو لا يوثق به من المنقول، مما عنيت به من مصنفات الفقه المبسوطة، ومما لا أحصيه من زوايا وخبايا، وبقايا وخفايا.
ثم استخرت الله تبارك وتعالى في تأليف ذلك وإبرازه لطالبيه، وحفظه على مبتغى العلم وحافظيه، واستجرت به من حظوظ الشيطان، واستعذته من الخطأ والحرمان، واستعنته واستهديته، وسألته فيه ثوابه الجسيم، وفضله العظيم وتبرأت من الحول والقوة إلا به.
وخصصت بهذا الكتاب علماء الشافعيين وخاصتهم، لكون حاجتنا وحاجة أهل أقطارنا إلى ذلك منهم أمس. وكنت قد عزمت على أن أذكر ما تناهى إلىّ من ذلك بإسناد بإسناده، وما كان بالوجادة فبالبلاغ عمن وجدته عنه، منصصاً عليه وعلى الكتاب الذي ذكره فيه، ناقلاً نص ألفاظه وإن طالت، وأجزاء بعضها أو ما هو أوجز منها، جرياً على عادة في ذلك، فنظرت.
فإذا الكتاب يطول بذكره طولاً يقلله.
وإن الفقهاء وأكثر الطوائف يزهدون في ذلك ويتبرمون به.
فأعرضت عن ذلك في أكثره، مقتصرا على أن أقول فيما أرويه بإسناد: روينا، وفي غيره: بلغنا، أو وجدت، أو ذكر كذا وكذا، وما ضاهى ذلك من وجوه الإيجاز، وجائزات الاختصار.
