كان المصنف عبد الرحيم بن الحسن الملقب بجمال الدين فقيهاً ماهراً ومعلماً ناصحاً ومفيداً صالحاً مع البرّ والدين والتودد والتواضح. اشتغل في العلوم حتى صار أوحد أهل زمانه وشيخ الشافعية في أوانه وصنف التصانيف النافعة. له مؤلفات عديدة منها طبقات الشافعية وهو الكتاب الذي بين يدي القارئ، ففيه صنف لرجال الشافعية مبتدئاً أولاً بترجمة الإمام الشافعي، ثم بأصحابه الذين عاصروه، وأخذوا منه، مرتبين ترتيب وفياتهم عند العلم بها، ذاكراً من ثم لباقي الأصحاب أبواباً على عدد حروف المعجم، مرتباً في كل باب منها فصلين: الأول في الأسماء الواقعة في "الشرح الكبير" للرافعي و"الروضة" للنووي، ذاكراً معهم من يتعلق بهم من أهل العلم من أب أو جد أو ولد أو حفيد ونحوهم، وإن لم يكونوا في الكتابين لأنه أحصر وأضبط. والفصل الثاني: في الأسماء الزائدة على ما وقع في الكتابين، مرتبة أيضاً الترتيب المشار إليه، وهو ترتيب الوفاة عند العلم بها، إلا عند ذكر جماعة من بيت واحد، فإن لم تكن وفاة الشخص منهم معلومة ذكره مع أهل طبقته. وقد جاء ذلك كله مرتباً على حروف المعجم معتبراً أول حرف من اللفظ الذي يحصل عند التعريف والشهرة، اسماً كان أو لقباً أو نسبة أو صفة ونحو ذلك، حتى اعتبر في الآباء والأبناء ونحوهما، وفي ما اشتهر بتصنيفه ونحوه، بالاسم الأخير، وهو المضاف إليه.
