يُجمع المسلمون قديماً وحديثاً أن نصوص (صحيح البخاري) أصح كتاب بعد كتاب الله تعالى، وكتاب "شواهد التوضيح والتصحيح لمشكلات الجامع الصحيح" يعرض ما وقع من إشكالات نحوية ولغوية في مسائل النحو تثبت الرواية بها؛ فيبيّن وجه قبولها ومستند اعتمادها.
وعلى هذا، لم يخرج إبن مالك في كتاب (شواهد التوضيح) عن خطه العام وطريقته المتميزة وأسلوبه المتفرد في معالجة المسائل العلمية: من البساطة والسهولة ومحاولة تقريب المصطلح النحوي وأصوله وضوابطه إلى أكبر قدر ممكن من المستويات للمستمعين والقراء، مع الحرص البالغ على تدعيم الأحكام والآراء بالأدلة العلمية والشواهد والإحالات على كبار أئمة العلم المعتبرين السابقين له.
وفي "شواهد التوضيح"، استشهادات تبدأ بالقرآن الكريم، مروراً بالأحاديث النبوية الشريفة، فلغات ولهجات القبائل العربية، وانتهاءً بالأشعار والأراجيز.
وقد كان لكتابه هذا حظه الوافر من تلك الشواهد: فاستشهد بـ (257) آية كريمة، منها (45) آية منقولة من غير القراء السبعة المشهورين، واستشهد بـ(82) حديثاً، عزا (12) حديثاً منها إلى مصادره من كتب الحديث ك (جامع المسانيد) لإبن الجوزي (...) واستشهد بـ (35) قولاً من أقوال العرب (...) أسند (13) قولاً منها إلى علماء اللغة الذين رووها، مثل الكسائي، وسيبويه (...) وغيرهم. أما لغات القبائل العربية فقد ذكرها في (18) موضعاً، نسب أكثرها إلى القائلين بها، مثل لغة قريش، والحجاز ... واستشهد بـ (226) بيتاً شعرياً، نسب منها (45) بيتاً لقائليها، وترك الباقي بلا نسبة، وقد انفرد بذكر (72) بيتاً من الأبيات التي لم يذكرها غيره، بل كان هو مصدر نقلها وروايتها عند من جاء بعده من أهل العلم والنحو ...
