هذا العمل هو محاولة للتعامل مع التراث بأدوات منهجيّة حديثة، وقد برهن صاحبه عن جرأة علميّة في مقاربة مسألة مغلّفة بالمقدّس، فأخضعها للدّرس الموضوعيّ.
وتكمن أهميّة المسألة في كون التكفير اخترق كلّ المجالات بإعتباره سلاحاً تعتمده المنظومات والمؤسّسات التي تمتلك سلطة دينيّة وسياسيّة.
ولمّا كان فهم التكفير بإعتباره ظاهرة حيّة وراهنة يتطلّب المعرفة بالتطوّر التاريخيّ لهذه الظاهرة وبفهم آلياتها وخلفياتها ورهاناتها في الفكر الإسلاميّ القديم، كان المجال الزمنيّ القديم إطاراً للبحث، يبدأ ببداية العهد النبويّ وينتهي بأواسط القرن السادس الهجريّ، وهي فترة تأسيسيّة برزت فيها أهمّ المصنّفات الخاصّة بالتكفير، واستقرت أهمّ المفاهيم والآليات المتعلّقة به، لكنّ الباحث آثر أن تكون أدوات التحليل والتفكيك والنقد منتمية إلى المجال الحديث.
وتكمن أهميّة الكتاب في مقاربته التكفير من خلال بعدين أساسيين ارتبطا به، هما: الشرعيّة من جهة والعنف من جهة أخرى، ومن الأسس التي قام عليها هذا الكتاب تنوّع المصادر والمراجع، وعدم التقيّد بمصادر مذهب واحد في فهم التكفير لأنّه لا يمكن فهم الإسلام فهماً موضوعيّاً إلاّ في وجوهه المتعدّدة والمتنوّعة.
فالتكفير يظلّ من مقتضيات المأسسة والحفاظ على السلطة، ولكنّه يصير في المقابل خطراً على الفكر والحضارة لأنه يقضي على التنوّع ويغتال النقد وينسف كلّ صروح الفكر والعقل.
والتكفير مفهوم تاريخيّ صنعه البشر، وإن كانت نشأته في حضن النصّ الدينيّ؛ فقد تطوّر في تفاعل مع الواقع، ولم يثبت على حال واحدة عبر العصور.
