فى عام 1964م، نشرنا هذا الكتاب: "لحن العوام" لأبي بكر الزبيدة فى سلسلة كنا أنشأناها فى ذلك الوقت، وسميناها: كتب لحن العامة وقد ذيلنا هذه النشرة آنذاك بملحق يشتمل على زيادات.
ولما كان ابن خير الإشبيلى قد ذكر فى فهرسته أن الزبيدى ألف كتابه مرتين، كما ذكر فى موضع آخر مختصراً رآه للكتاب، فقد هممت حينذاك أن أسمى كتاب الزبيدى، باسم : "مختصر لحن العامة" غير أن احتمال أن تكون تلك النصوص، قد سقطت من مخطوطتنا، ولم يكن غيابها بفعل الزبيدى نفسه، جعلنى أوثر الإبقاء على عنوان الكتاب، كما تحمله المخطوطة، وأن ألحق النصوص الزائدة بآخر الكتاب.
وكان حسنا ما فعلته آنذاك، لأنني اكتشفت قبل عدة سنوات، مخطوطة في مكتبة "تشستربتى" فى دبلن بأيرلندا بعنوان: "التهذيب بمحكم الترتيب لما نثره الشيخ أبو بكر محمد بن حسن الزبيدى، فى كلا وضعيه في لحن العامة بالأندلس" شهيد الأندلس عندما تصفحتها عرفت منها أن الزبيدى الف كتابه مرتين، واختار فى الثانية منها مجموعة من كلمات اللحن، التى تختلف عما ذكره فى مؤلفه الأول، الذى نشرناه من قبل.
وعندما وقعت على هذه المخطوطة الرائعة، عزمت على إعادة نشر كتاب الزبيدى مرة أخرى. واليوم أحمد الله عز وجل، أن تمكنت من إخراج هذا الكتاب العظيم تاما كاملاً، محققا ومفهرسا، ليفيد منه عشاق التراث العربي، م الزملاء والأحباب والتلامذة.
