هو تفسير كامل للقرآن الكريم، اقتصر فيه الإمام الماوردي على تفسير ما خفي من آيات القرآن الكريم، أما الجلي الواضح فتركه لفهم القارئ، وقد جمع فيه بين أقاويل السلف والخلف، كما أضاف إلى ذلك ما ظهر له من معنى محتمل. ورتبه ترتيباً بديعاً، فهو يحصر الأقوال الكثير من تأويل الآية في عدد، ثم يفصلها الأول فالثاني فالثالث... الخ، وينسب كل قول إلى قائله غالباً، مع توجيه لبعض الأقوال، وترجيح، كما أنه يترك كثيراً منها بدون توجيه وترجيح.
وقد اعتنى فيه بالتفسيرات اللغوية، فيذكر أصول الكلمات، ويوضحها بضرب الأمثال، والاستشهاد عليها بالشعر، ويربطها بالمعنى المراد من الآية في عبارة موجزة ناصعة البيان.
هذا وقد امتاز تفسير الماوردي بأمور منها: 1-جمعه لأقوال السلف والخلف التي قيلت في تفسير الآية، 2-تحليلاته اللغوية الدقيقة في بيان مفردات الآية. 3-منهجية الدقيق في حصر الأقوال، 4-أنه لم يقتصر على المأثور فحسب، بل جمع فيه إلى المأثور ذكر الوجوه والقراءات، والأحكام والفقهيات. 5-مكانة المؤلف في الفقه الشافعي وكونه إماماً فرداً فيه، وقيمة الاحتجاج بما يرجحه.
وهذه طبعة مشكولة الآيات والأحاديث والأشعار والكلمات المشكلة، وقد وضع عليه هوامش وتعليقات للسيد بن عبد المقصود بن عبد الرحيم.
