كتاب متميز لأبي بكر عبد الله بن محمد بن أبي الدنيا المتوفى سنة 281هـ، هو أول تأليف من نوعه في تاريخ الإسلام وجمع فيه من أعلام المتمنين الجم الغفير، وقد تنوعت أمنيات أعلام هذا الكتاب، بحسب طبائعهم وظروفهم المتنوعة، فمنهم من تمنى الشهادة، ومنهم من تمنى لو لم يك شيئاً. ولم يعثر المحقق إلا على نسخة واحدة موجودة في تركيا ونسخة أخرى هي مختارات من الكتاب غير مسندة تبلغ ثلث فقرات الكتاب الأصل فقط.
المخطوطة الأولى بسماع أحمد بن عبد الله بن أبي الغنايم المسلم بن حماد بن ميسرة الأزدي قراءة على الشيخة الصالحة أم الفضل كريمة بنت الشيخ الأمين أبي محمد عبد الوهاب بن علي بن الخضر القرشية الزبيرية. وقد عمد المحقق إلى توثيق النسخ الأولى وعمل على ترجمة الإعلام المذكورين في المتن وخرج الأحاديث والآيات بعزوها إلى مصادرها. وعرف ببعض الكلمات الغريبة. ورقم الفقرات، كما عوض عن النقص الحاصل بسبب عدم توزيع فقرات الكتاب على الإعلام بوضع فهارس في آخر الكتاب تسهل على الباحث أو القارئ الوصول إلى مبتغاه.
