تزخر مكتبات المتاحف والجامعات الأمريكية بروائع ذخائر تراثنا العربي والإسلامي المخطوط، وقد قامت دراسات عدة للتعريف بخزائنها ومكنوناتها إلا أن فهارس تلك المكتبات بقيت مجهولة للكثير من المحققين والباحثين، ويرجع ذلك إلى أن تلك الفهارس لا تصل إلى البلاد العربية. ومن أهم خزائن المخطوطات في أمريكا: خزانة جامعة برنستون بولاية (نيوجرسي) حيث تحتوي على ما يقارب عشرة آلاف مخطوط عربي. وقد أصدرت جامعة برنستون ثلاثة فهارس تصف المخطوطات العربية المجتمعة لديها من سنة (1900م) إلى سنة (1983م)؛ وهي: - فهرس مخطوطات مجموعة جاريت، وهو من إعداد فيليب حتِّي، ونبيه أمين فارس، وبطرس عبد الملك، وطبع في المطبعة الأمريكية ببيروت سنة (1938م). - فهرس مخطوطات قسم يهودا، وهو من إعداد رودلف ماخ، وطبع في نيوجرسي بمطبعة الجامعة سنة (1977م). - فهرس مخطوطات السلسلة الجديدة، وهو من إعداد رودلف ماخ، وطبع في نيوجرسي بمطبعة الجامعة سنة (1978م). - فهرس المخطوطات غير المفهرسة في جامعة برنستون، وهو من إعداد رودلف ماخ، وطبع في نيوجرسي بمطبعة الجامعة سنة (1987م)، وتضمنت المستدركات التي لم تفهرس سابقاً مما حصلت عليه المكتبة حتى سنة (1995م) بالإهداء والشراء، وكذلك ما أُهمل فهرسته سابقاً من الأقسام الأخرى. فتم تعريب هذه الفهارس الثلاثة مع السلسلة الجديدة والمستدرك على ذلك، وجعله في مجموع واحد، ضم بين جنباته فهرسة لكنوزنا العربية والإسلامية. وإن سقيفة الصفا العلمية لتزف إلى الأمة الإسلامية هذه الفهارس للمخطوطات العربية والإسلامية في حلة بهية؛ ليستفيد منها الباحثون والمحققون. ونسأل الله أن يهيئ من ينفض الغبار والرمال عن هذه الكنوز الثمينة، ويجعلها في متناول أيدي العلماء وطلاب العلم، وأن يهيئ للمكتبات الأخرى من يقوم بعمل مماثل، إنه سميع مجيب.
