عرف الحافظ ابن أبي الدنيا بـ(مؤدب أولاد الخلفاء) حيث قام بتعليم عدد من أولاد الخلفاء العباسيين وكتابه "العيال" خير شاهد على سعة علمه في التأديب والتعليم، ولهذا ومع اختيار المحقق "مازن بن عبد الرحمن البيروتي" على هذا الكتاب لتقريبه بين يدي الأمة، فالمؤلف رحمه الله، تكلم في كتابه حول الزواج وكيفية اختيار الزوجة المناسبة، وحقوق الزوج على زوجته وحقوقها عليه، وتكلم حول ما يتوجب على أهل الولد تجاهه منذ ولادته: كالعقيقة، والختان، وتسمية المولود، والصلاة على السقط، والميراث، وغيرها من الأمور، وتكلم على أهمية تعليم القرآن للأولاد الصغار، وتعليمهم أمور دينهم الحنيف، والرحمة بهم، والصبر عليهم، وأنهم فتنة في هذه الحياة الدنيا، وحكم ضربهم، وبعض أحوالهم في الطهارة والصلاة والصيام، وأمور كثيرة غيرها.
وبالعودة لعمل المحقق نجد أنه قد اهتم بدراسة أحاديث وآثار الكتاب لتمييز صحيحها من سقيمها، بعد ذلك انتقى من الأحاديث والآثار الصحيحة ما يفي بمدلول الباب الذي ذكره المؤلف، لأنه قد يكرر نفس الحديث بعدة أسانيد أو بألفاظ متقاربة. من ثم قام باختصار السند مكتفياً بذكر صحابي الحديث أو تابعي الأثر. مندرجاً في تخريج الحديث: فإن كان في الصحيحين أو أحدهما اكتفيت بالعزو إليها، وإن كان في السنن الأربعة أو بعضها اكتفى بالعزو إليها، وإلا ذكر ما تيسر. بعدها أضاف بعض الفوائد الفقهية المتعلقة بالأحاديث وبعض الشرح لغريب الحديث إتماماً للفائدة.
