إن الفيومي - رحمه الله - من الفقهاء الذين جمعوا إلى معرفتهم بالفقه المعرفةَ باللغة وعلومها أيضاً، فقد انصرفت هِمَّتُه إلى وضع معجم لُغَوي بعتني فيه بما وَرَدَ من الألفاظ الغريبة والعبارات المُشكِلة التي وقعت في كتاب الإمام الرافعي "فتح العزيز"، فجمع في ذلك كتاباً واسعاً وأضاف إليه زياداتٍ من غيره، ولقد جمعه من نحو سبعين مصنفاً ما بين مطوَّل ومُختصرَ، وتبسَّط في الكتاب فذكر فيه من تصاريف الكلمة والألفاظ المشتبهات والمتماثلات وإعراب الشواهد وبيان معانيها وغير ذلك مما تدعو إليه حاجةُ الأديب الماهر، فلما رأى كِبَرَ حجمه وتوسُّعَه فيه عَمَدَ إلى إختصاره وتهذيبه ليسهُلَ تناوُلُه، فجاء على الصورة التي بين أيدينا وسماه: "المصباح المنير في غريب الشرح الكبير"، وكان فراغه من تأليفه في شعبان سنة 734 هجرية.
وقد عمد المؤلف الكتاب إلى مقابلته وتصحيحه ما وسع الجهد على طبعات من سبق، ضبطه بتحريك القلم في كل ما يحتاج إلى ضبط، تحلية النصوص وتزينها بعلامات الترقيم، وصنع الأصل الثلاثي للمادة، تميز أهم الألفاظ في المادة تخريج الآيات القرآنية وقرائتها مع الإشارة، تخريج الأحاديث النبوية بالعزو إلى الصحيحين، تخريج ما أمكن تخريجه من الآثار المروية عن الصحابة، عزو الشواهد الشعرية التي لم ينسها المصنف إلى قائليها.
