يُعالج هذا الكتاب، بالغ الأهمية؛ موضوعًا لم يلقَ عناية كافية من قبل. إذ رغم المحاولات السنية الشيعية المستمرة طوال القرن العشرين للتقاُرب وإيجاد أرضية مشتركة، فليس ثم عمل واحد مكرَّس لدراسة تلك المحاولات والنتائج التي نجمت عنها. لذا؛ فإن كتاب برونر يملأ فراغًا طال أمده في حقل دراسات الإسلام في العصر الحديث. ويصِفُ هذا الكتاب المراحِل المختلفة لحوار التقريب بين السُنَّة والشيعة خلال القرن العشرين، مُستعرِضًا فترات النجاح قصير الأجل التي حققها ذلك الحوار، فضلًا عن السجالات الضارية، والمتبادَلة؛ التي تولَّدت عنها بشكلٍ حتمي. كذا تُولي هذه الدراسة عناية خاصة لدور مؤسسة الأزهر في ذلك الحوار وعلاقاتها مع علماء الشيعة، بوصفها أكثر مُمثلي الإسلام السُني أهمية. إذ ارتبط الاعتماد المتبادَل للحجاج الكلامي والدوافع السياسية، للطرفين المتحاورين؛ بأهمية استثنائية، خصوصًا فيما يتعلَّق بأهمية التقريب الإسلامي للسياسة الخارجية المصريّة إبّان خمسينيات القرن العشرين. وقد أوقِفَ القسم الأكبر من هذا الكتاب على دراسة الحقبة السابقة على الثورة الإسلامية في إيران (ما قبل عام1979م)، وإن أشار المؤلف في طيّات عمله الفذّ إشارات سريعة إلى سياق ما بعد الثورة، وحاول تتبُّع التطوّرات اللاحقة عليها في تذييله، إلى مطلع القرن الحادي والعشرين. أخيرًا وليس آخرًا، فالكتاب لا يُعالج العلاقات السنية مع كل المذاهِب الشيعية، بل يقتصِرُ على المذهب الشيعي الإثنا عشري، والذي ينتمي إليه جمهور المسلمين الشيعة.
