يهدف الكتاب الى بيان المعني بالقراءات القرآنية عامة وكشف وجوهها، والفصل فيما ألبس من بحثه، كما يبحث في الأصناف الثلاثة من القراءات، فيوضحها ويكشف عن خصائصها، وكيف نشأت، والى أي شيء انتهت، وما أسباب نشأتها، ومراحل تكونها وشيوعها، وغير ذلك. ويعتبرهذا العلم من أخطر علوم القرآن، ويتبين هذا الخطر بما يلي: قيامه على أخبار وآثار مروية متناثرة في دواوين الحديث وكتب الفن والتفسير واللغة, اقتصار المتقدمين عند عرضهم للموضوع أو جانب منه على بعض تلك الأخبار والآثار دون بعضها الآخر، اختلاف رواة الأخبار والآثار في مناهج سوق تلك الأخبار والآثار من حيث صحتها وضعفها, اختلاط رواة آراء بعض المتقدمين في توجيه الأخبار والآثار حتى حد التناقض في فوائدها ونتائج الرأي والبحث فيها، بعد عهد المتأخرين بتلك الأخبار والآثار وانبهام صلتها بالموضوع وغموض وجهها عليهم.
هو مكي بن أبي طالب القيسي, مغربي الأصل أندلسي المنزل, رحل في طلب العلم الى بلاد المشرق العربي, أهم شيوخه: ابن أبي زيد, أبو الحسن القابسي, أهم تلاميذه: أبو عمر المقرىء, وأبو عبد الله الطرفي.
