مرات عديدة تحدث نجيب محفوظ عن تأثرہ (بطه حسين) حتى إنه كتب سيرته الذاتية الخاصة بالطفولة في نهاية العشرينيات من القرن الماضي في نص طويل أسماہ (الأعـوام)، مستلهماً العنوان من «الأيام» للعميد، ولسنوات طويلة، ظـل ما كتبه محفوظ مفقوداً حتى عثر عليه أخيراً الكاتب والباحث (محمد شعير) الذي خاض رحلة مشوقة بحثاً عنه حتى اهتدى إليه بعد أن تنقل النص بين أربع قارات مختلفة إذ خرج من مصر إلى أمريكا ثم إلى لندن حتى استقر أخيراً في إحدى الدول العربية.
من خلال هذا العمل الذي ينشر للمرة الأولى مع نصوص ووثائق أخرى، يبرع شعير في كتابة سيرة موازية لـ (طفولة نجيب محفوظ)، ليصل عبر قراءة أدبية عميقة إلى أن هذا النص يشبه نواة تحطّمت في ( الانفجار العظيم) إلى عشرات الأعمال الإبداعية العظيمة ، وصولاً إلى نصوص ( أصداء السيرة الذاتية ) التي قطع فيها محفوظ نفسه رحلة بحث معكوسة عن طفولته.
