إن مرتبة السنة النبوية في الحجية تلي مرتبة القرآن الكريم، إذ هي مفسرة لنصوصه ومبينة لمعناه بتخصيص عامه، وتقييد مطلقه وتوضيح مشكله، وتعيين مبهمه، وتعليل محكمه، واتباعها واجب كالكتاب الكريم. وقد حرص المسلمون في عصر النبوة على معظمها في صدورهم، ونشرها في مجتمعاتهم، وروايتها عند الحكم على نوازلهم وأحداثهم.
إلا أنه وفي عصر التدوين، تم تدوين تلك السنة تحت عنوان علوم الحديث، وكانت هناك مصنفات كثيرة. وتأتي "المنظومة البيقونية" من المؤلفات المهمة في هذا العلم، وقد شرحها جماعة منهم محمد بن صعدان الحاجري، وشرحها الحموي وابن الميت الدمياطي، وجمع بينها وزاد عليها محمد بن عبد الباقي الزرقاني. وعلى شرحه حاشية لعطية الأجهوري. وهذا الشرح وهذه الحاشية هما اللذان تم التعليق عليهما في هذا الكتاب.
المنظومة البيقونية هي منظومة مختصرة في علم مصطلح الحديث الشريف وهي من أهم ما كتب في هذا الفن، وفي هذا الكتاب شرح الشيخ محمد بن عبد الباقي الزرقاني حيث فكك ألفاظها ووضح معانيها وبين ما تضمنته من مسائل في هذا الفن وجاء بأقوال علماء الحديث . وقد أضفنا أيضا هنا كتاب حاشية الأجهوري على شرح الزرقاني وهذه طبعة محققة وعليها تعليقات، وفيها تخريج للأحاديث
