يلقي هذا الكتاب الضوء على شاعر كبير هو راشد الخلاوي، ويحظى الخلاوي بمكانة كبيرة بين شعراء أهل الجزيرة العربية الذين كانوا في العصور الغابرة؛ لما سجله من أبيات بارعة سارت بها الركبان وحفظها الناس وردّدوها على ظهور الإبل أو في مجالسهم، وتمثلوا بها في الحكمة والشجاعة والغزل والمدح والوفاء.
ولعل الدافع الأساسي وراء اختيار هذه الدراسة هو ما لاحظه المؤلف في قصائده من عبارات فصيحة وصور بلاغية اعتادها الفصحاء في العصور المتقدمة، وكان أكثرَها جذباً ذِكرُه لمواضع تلاشت عند شعراء العصور المتأخرة وتعبيرُه بصور بلاغية للصحراء والإبل والخيل لم يعتدها شعراء النبط.
ويتعرّض مؤلف الكتاب لمباحث تعطي صورةً موجزة عن الشعر الشعبي، ونبذة عن راشد الخلاوي وقصائده، مع عرضٍ للجوانب الفنية في شعره وأغراض الشعر عنده، وعصر الشاعر.
