أصعب عناصر لغة ما لمن أراد التضلع منها، ليست ألفاظها أو جملها التي تمكن ترجمتها كلمة فكلمة إلى لسان آخر، بل التعابير المختصة بها التي يستحيل في الغالب نقلها نقلاً حرفياً إلى سائر الألسن. وهي تحصى بالآلاف في العربية، وقد أطلقوا من نحو عشرين سنة اسم العرباويات المنسوب إلى العرب العرباء أي الصرحاء. من جهة أخرى يتضح أن تواتر استعمال تلك التعابير في لغتنا يزيد الإنشاء طلاوة، ويصبغه أكثر من سائر الوسائل صبغة عربية محضة تميز لساننا بأعلى درجة عن غيره".
لذلك قد توخّينا خدمة لغة الضاد وآلاف أدبائها وربوات التلاميذ المكبّين على دراستها بجمع أربعة آلاف ونيف من أجمل العرباويات، ورتّبناها على حسب معانيها ترتيباً منطقياً يسهّل حفظها والبحث عنها عند مسيس الحاجة، قد جعلنا ما ترادف منها على شكل سلاسل، وشرحنا كلّ العرباويات ما عدا الواضح معناها، وفسّرنا في الحواشي ما تضمّنته من الكلمات العويصة المستعملة مراراً عديدة على وجه المجاز، من أمثال ذلك أن "كظم الغيظ" بمعنى "أخفاه" قد نشأت عن "كظم النهر"؛ أي "سدّه"، قد أشرنا بنجمة إلى العرباويات المهجورة، ولم ننبذها لإفادة هواة أدبنا القديم.
