يدرس هذا الكتاب موضوع بناء الجملة في جمهرة رسائل العرب في ضوء علم اللغة الحديث، فنحن نعلم أنّ العرب كانوا يتكلمون في الجاهلية لغةً واحدة، لكن كانوا ينطقونها بلهجات مختلفة، تختلف فيما بينها في قليل من الأنظمة، وعندما جاء الإسلام، ودخل الناس في دين الله أفواجاً، واعتنق الدين الجديد أمم شتّى، وأقبلوا عليه يتعلمون لغته، ويتدارسون كتابه، ويتفهمون أحكامه، انتشرت العربية إنتشاراً كبيراً، واختلط العرب بالعجم، فدخل من جرّاء هذا الإختلاط الخلل في اللسان، وتسرب الفساد إلى السليقة، وظهر اللحن، واستشرى الخطأ في اللغة حتى امتدّ إلى ألسنة بعض الناس في قراءة القرآن الكريم، الأمر الذي جعل أولي البصر يفكرون في حفظ العربية بعد هذا التحول الذي طرأ على اللسان، ففكروا في وضع قواعد لحفظ العربية، فكان علم النحو واللغة.
لهذا قام الكاتب بدراسة بناء الجملة العربية في النثر العربي القديم، وذلك تقديم صورة واضحة عن أنماط الجملة لدى النحاة العرب، وقد استثني منها ما لا علاقة له بصلب التوصيف اللغوي الخالص، كالعلل المنطقية، والفلسفة، والأقيسة، وغير ذلك من الإستطرادات التي أثقلت الدرس النحوي؛ كما وتهدف هذه الدراسة إلى معارضة الصورة التنظيرية الواردة لدى النحاة، بصورة ما جاءت عليه أنماط الجملة في عيّنة من نصوص الإستعمال ممثلة في جمهرة رسائل العرب، ولما كانت عيّنة النصوص المختارة تمتد على أفق زمني يتناول عصرين لغويين، أحدهما يقع ضمن عصر الإحتجاج اللغوي، والآخر يقع خارج عصر الإحتجاج اللغوي حتى سنة (334هـ).
فقد كان في ميسور هذه الدراسة أن تفيد من هذه النصوص على النحو الآتي: تفيد بالرسائل الواقعة ضمن عصر الإحتجاج اللغوي في الوقوف على الصورة الواقعيّة لمدى تمثيل قواعد النحاة لنصوص تنتمي إلى الفترة الزمنيّة التي استنبطت منها تلك القواعد؛ كما تفيد الرسائل الواقعة خارج فترة عصر الإحتجاج اللغوي في تقديم صورة لأنماط الجملة موازنة للصورة التي قدمت لها في نصوص عصر الإحتجاج، وبذا نكون قد وقفنا إحصائياً على منظومتين متوازيتين لأنماط الجمل في عيّنتين تتكافآن في موضوعهما، ولكنهما تتباينان في زمانهما.
