يضم المؤلف نخبة منتقاة من أصحّ آثار النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم اختارها الشارح من صحيحي البخاري ومسلم ورتبها حسب تبويب الفقهاء في كتب الفروع، لتكون عوناً على أخذ المسائل من أدلتها الصحيحة، فإنها أصول وقواعد، يرجع إليها المنتهي.
وقد وجد الشارح بأن ألفاظ الأحاديث تحتاج إلى بحث وتدقيق، وكشف وتحقيق لأن كلامه صلى الله عليه وسلم بحر يغاص فيه على جواهر المعاني، ولا يستخرج حكمه إلا الراسخون في العلم، لذا فقد عمد إلى كتاب علي بن وهب القشيري الذي خاص في معاني أحاديث العمدة، فعوّل عليه في شرح تلك المعاني، وسمى ما جمعه من فوائده والتقطه من فرائده "أحكام الأحكام في شرح سيد الأنام صلى الله عليه وسلم" بأن الشارح ابن دقيق العيد أملى على تلميذه عماد الدين القاضي من حفظه، ولا يخفى ما في الإملاء من الإيجاز والاختصار الموجبين لغموض بعض المسائل، وإبهام بعض من قال بها من الأئمة ومن لم يقل بها ولا سيما تطبيق المذاهب على الأدلة الشرعية والقواعد الأصولية، لذا فقد قام المحقق بالاعتناء به حيث قام بالتوسع في التعبير والإيضاح للمعنى وذلك على ضوء علمه بالمنقول والمعقول وهو العارف بالسنة صحيحها وضعيفها، ناسخها ومنسوخها، راجحها ومرجوحها، دون إغفال تحقيق المسائل الواردة على المذاهب حيث قام بترجيح ما رآه مناسباً وذلك بالأدلة المنقولة والبراهين المعقولة.
