نظراً لأن هذا الكتيب كنت قد بدأته لما كان عمري خمسة وعشرين عاماً، فسوف يكون من الممكن أن يقال عنه كل شيء ما عدا إنه مرتجل أو دخيل أو مُبتسر. لما وصلت إلى غرناطة عام 1930 كأستاذ كرسي اللغة العربية، كانت دراسة نقوش قصر الحمراء مشروعي العلمي الرئيسي. لكن تأسيس مدرسة الدراسات أجبراني على الانتقال إلى الجزء السفلي من المدينة ووضع العديد من التدوينات المجموعة في حالة سبات. وبعد انتقالي إلى مدريد، انضممت عام 1943 إلى الأكاديمية الملكية للتاريخ بمحاضرة عنوانها « ابن زمرك، شاعر قصر الحمراء »، والذي تضمن ترجمة شعرية لقصيدة قاعة الأختين، وهي القطعة الكبرى من النقوش. إن "شعر النقوش" في قصر الحمراء، كما يقال الآن عن حق، يمثل انفجاراً للجمال معقداً ومميزاً وإلى حد ما فريداً، فقد شكل وعلى مدى عدة قرون "تحدياً فكرياً"، ويجب أن أعترف أن مثل هذا النوع من التحديات قد حرّك دائماً ذكائي المتواضع وأحمى فورة دمي.
