إن الأدبية ليلى العثمان ذات مكانة وشهرة، ليس في بلدها الكويت فقط، وإنما في الأوساط الثقافية في الأقطار العربية المترامية ما بين الخليج والمحيط، وتتجاوزها إلى بعض أقطار آسيا وأوروبا، من خلال ترجمة بعض قصصها (التي سنتعرف عليها) إلى لغات تلك الأقطار، ولكن هذه الشهرة كانت سلاحاً ذا حدّين؛ لأن الكتابة الأدبية أو النقدية عن إبداع أديب استقرت خصائص فنه أو قاربت الإستقرار، وتعددت كتابات الدارسين حوله مما ييسر مهمة الدراسة الجديدة ويمنحها تنوعاً وإمتداداً، وهذا هو الوجه الإيجابي، أما الوجه السلبي، وهو مجرد إحتمال، فإنه يستند إلى القول المأثور المتداول بين الدارسين، وهو أن "المعاصرة حجاب "؛ معنى أن "الموضوعية" صعبة التحقق عندما نكتب عن أديب معاصر، أو يكتب غيرنا عنه كذلك، وهذا لأن الدارس المعاصر يتأثر غالباً بالجوانب الشخصية، وبالعلاقة، وبالأقوال المتداولة، وقد يدفعه هذا للمبالغة في تصيّد المميزات والمبالغة في وصفها - عند الرضا والموافقة، كما قد يدفعه هذا إلى المبالغة في تجسيد الأخطاء والهفوات الصغيرة - عند إنعدام الرضا ورفض الطريقة.
