لمَا كان الشعر العربي عمدة الأدب، وعلم العرب الذي اختصَت به عن سائر الأمم، وديوانها وسجل حكمتها ومصدر فخرها وعزها – فقد قامت لدراسة الشعر من جوانبه المتعددة دراسات عديدة، نبغ فيها من أبناء العربية علماء بذلوا غاية جهدهم في دراسة الشعر والشعراء والعصر الذي عاشوا فيه ومحاسنهم وإبداعاتهم التي انفردوا بها دون سواهم.
وكان من بين تلك المصادر والمراجع، كتاب (يتيمة الدهر في محاسن أهل العصر) لصاحبه (أبي منصور الثعالبى) ويعدَ هذا الكتاب من أوفى المراجع الأدبية لمن أراد أن يدرس الشعر العربي، ولمن أراد أن يدرس الحالة الإجتماعية والسياسية من طريق النتاج الأدبي في القرن الرابع وصدر من القرن الخامس الهجري، كما اهتم بطبقات الأفاضل من الملوك والرؤساء، وعني بتأثيرهم في الأدب، وما كان من إنتاجهم الأدبي الخالص، وما يتعلق بذلك من الأخبار والنوادر وغرر الألفاظ.
وقد قام الأستاذ العلامة (محمد محي الدين عبد الحميد) عالم اللغة، يتحقيق نصوص هذا الكتاب، وتقويم ما اعوجَ منها بفعل الناسخين، والناشرين، وقام بمراجعته على أصوله المخطوطة، كما شرح ما دعت الحاجة إلى شرحه، خدمة منه للعربية وأهلها.
