إن كتاب مكارم الأخلاق كتاب نفيس في بابه، ممتع لقارئه، مفيد للعامل بأحكامه، جامع بين الحديث النبوي والخبر الأدبي والقصة التاريخية، والشعر، والحكمة البالغة، والقول المأثور فهو يعد بحق من كتب أدب الأخلاق. والإمام الخرائطي إمام حافظ متقن، وأديب لغوي، ومؤلف ماهر، جمع في تأليفه ألواناً من العلوم وطريقته في ذلك طريقة القدامى كالمبرد، والأصمعي، وابن أبي الدنيا، وغيرهمز
ففي تآليفه يعلم الناس الأخلاق بالحكمة والموعظة الحسنة، وبأسلوب أدبي ممتع، يجذب القارئ لمتابعة الأخبار المروية، ويحببه للعمل بما فيها كما جاء عن كبار العلماء والصالحين، والزهاد، والحكماء، والشعراء. وبهذا الأسلوب المحبب للقارئ تلقى العلماء كتاب مكارم الأخلاق وتناقلوه جيلاً بعد جيل، ليصل بعدها إلى الإمام الكبير الحافظ أحمد بن محمد السلفي إمام المحدثين في عصره.
وينتقي منه، طريقته في ذلك طريقة العلماء في انتقاء الكتب وتلقيها عن الشيوخ، وهذه الطريقة هي اختيار الأخبار وحذف المكرر منها، ونقدها أو التي هي بألفاظ متقاربة أو بمعان متشابهة. وهذا ما فعله الحافظ السلفي. فقد انتقى كتاب مكارم الأخلاق وتلقاه عن شيخه أبي الحسن علي بن مسلم السلمي، وسمعه عليه بالجامع الأموي في المنارة الغربية منه سنه 511هـ. والنسخة التي تم تحقيقها ونشرها في هذه الطبعة هي نسخة الحافظ السلفي وبخطه، وهي نسخة قيمة فريدة، افتخر مؤرخ دمشق ابن طولون بالاحتفاظ بها...
