على أنه خلق بالطبع شاعراً غمْرَ البديهة فياض القريحة ينطبق عليه ما قاله هو على لسان الشاعر المحتضر: "أنا أغني يا صحابتي كما يتنفس الإنسان، ويغرد العصفور ويعزف الهواء، ويخر الماء".
ولقد كان شعره الحي العميق المؤثر بدء عهد جديد للشعر الوجداني.
وطالما قال بلهجة الفخور: "إنه أبدل إلهة الشعر من قيثارتها ذات الأوتار السبعة أعصاب القلب البشري يحركها ما لا عدَّ له من خلجات النفس وهزّات الطبيعة".
