يشكل هذا الكتاب سيرة حياة الإمام الحسين بن علي رضي الله عنه منذ النشأة وحتى الشهادة. يبدأ المؤلف بتفكيك إسم الحسين من حيث المعنى والمصطلح والدلالة، ولماذا سمي حسيناً وكيف ورد ذكره في أحاديث نبي الله وآل بيته عليهم السلام، وفي الكتب المعتبرة لأهل بيت النبوة، مروراً برسالة الحسن الإيمانية (إحقاق الحق وزهق الباطل) والصعوبات والتحديات التي واجهت بيعته. يقول إبن عباس: رأيت الحسين بن علي عليه السلام قبل أن يتوجه إلى العراق على باب الكعبة وكفّ جبريل في كفه وجبريل ينادي: "هلموا إلى بيعة الله عزّ وجلّ" وفي هذه البيعة يقول المؤلف: وهذه البيعة هي في الحقيقة إندكاك النفس التي هداها الله في نور الإمامة ولم ترَ النفس المبايعة إلا مرآته".
يغطي الكتاب جميع ما ورد من قِبل علماء أهل بيت النبوة عن سيرة الحسين ومآثره وعصره وبالأخص الحياة الدينية والسياسية للفترة التي عاشها عليه السلام، ومنها ما ورد عن الحسين في كتاب (جامع الأخبار) و كتاب (دلائل الإمامة) للطبري وغيرها من كتب، وشيئاً من علمه وكلامه وفلسفته ودعائه وقضائه ووصاياه وطاعته لله عز وجل وكذا مكانته عند الله وآل بيته وحتى استشهاده.
يرى مؤلف الكتاب أن المتتبع لآثار أهل البيت "والمتتبع لآثارهم يرى كل ما وقع بهم إنما هو في سبيل إحياء كلمة الحق، وإظهار الدين الحق فكان صبرهم لتظهر الحقيقة لذي عينين ولئلا يضل الناس عن طريق الهدى ... فتحملوا المصائب والنوائب والمشاق ... لئلا يرتد الناس عن دينهم الحق ...".
