في هذا الكتاب يقدم الأستاذ الدكتور محسن محمد حسين (بحوث في التأريخ الكردي) وهي خاصة بتاريخ أربيل في العهد الأتابكي، ولا سيما في فترة حكم الملك السلطان مظفر الدين كوكبوري، وبحوث أخرى عن جوانب من تاريخ صلاح الدين يوسف بن أيوب بن شادي الروادي الهذباني، الذي عُرف منذ عقود باسم صلاح الدين الأيوبي، والذي شهد عصره أكثر من حادثة عابرة في تاريخ الحروب الصليبية، فبرأي المؤلف يمثل الأيوبي إحدى تلك اللحظات النادرة والمثيرة في التاريخ البشري، حتى أنه كان كما وصفه الأمبراطور غليوم بأنه، كان أعظم رجال عصره وفريد دهره شجاعة وبسالة وشهامة. أما عن علاقة (إبن الأثير) بصلاح الدين، التي يفرد لها مؤلف الكتاب مكاناً هاماً في عمله هذا، فتعود إلى أن إبن الأثير بالذات كان من بين المؤرخين الذين عمدوا إلى تبيان موقفه من صلاح الدين. فهو الوحيد الذي عاصره، والذي أظهره بمظهر غير لائق، ويعود هذا بتقدير المؤلف "لأن إبن الأثير كان على اتصال شخصي بإدارة الموصل في عهد الملوك الزنكيين الذين ناصبوا صلاح الدين العداء"، وفي هذا السياق يورد المؤلف رأي بعض المؤرخين في كتابة إبن الأثير عن صلاح الدين الأيوبي ومنهم الدكتور "طليمات" ودفاعه عن صلاح الدين، وغيرها من المؤلفات التاريخية التي تحدثت عن أعلام تلك الفترة ومفكريها مثل عز الدين الاربلي، وشمس الدين أحمد الشهير بإبن خلكان صاحب كتاب (وفيات الأعيان)، وتراجم لأشخاص ماتوا ولكنهم كانوا قد كتبوا الكثير من المؤلفات التاريخية المهمة والسير عن الفترة التي حكم فيها الملك مظفر الدين كوكبوري والتي عرفت بعصر اربيل الذهبي في التاريخ الإسلامي.
