للأديان الثلاث موقف متصلّبٌ تمامًا في معارضة إخضاع كائنٍ بشريّ لآخر. تصرّ ثلاثتها على أن الرجال والنساء خُلِقوا على صورة الرب، وأنّ كِلا الجنسين متساويان في الحقوق والواجبات أمام الله. كلها تحتفي بذكرى نساء ذوات بأسٍ، وعلمٍ، لعبن دوْراً ما محوريّاً في تاريخ الخلاص. ومع ذلك، فمن المشترك بين أغلب عقائد العالم الكبرى، أنه لم يكن أيٌّ منها جيدًا بصورة واضحة بالنسبة للنساء، فثلاثتها دفعت النساء نحو وضع هامشي متدنٍّ، مستبعدةً إياهن من المشاركة الكاملة في حياة المجتمع الاجتماعية، والثقافية، والدينية. فعلى الرغم من أن شخصيات محورية مثل المسيح، والقديس بولس، والنبي محمد، كانت لهم رؤية إيجابية تجاه النساء: اعتمدوا عليهن، وعاملوهن كصحابيات ذوات رأي مقدَّر؛ إلا أن بعضًا من أكثر: الحكماء، ورجال الدين، والفقهاء، اعتباراً، قد بشَّروا بكُرْهِ المرأة صراحةً. وفي السنوات الأخيرة، جابهت النساء هذه الهيمنة البطريركية في التقاليد الثلاثة.
الاضطهاد الديني للمرأة: كان أحد أكبر عيوب العقائد التوحيدية، رغم حقيقة أنها تنافي مبادئ جوهرية في إيمانها. فالرجال: اليهود، والمسيحيون، والمسلمون، اختطفوا الوحي تماماً، وجعلوه متوافقاً مع البطريركية الذكورية القديمة، المفتقدة.
