هذا الكتاب يضم محاولات تفسيرية تتركَّز حول الأصول التاريخية (المتغيرة)، واللاتاريخية (الطبيعية، الثابتة منذ الأزل، التي لا يَطولها التغيُّر) للمسألة اليمنية الراهنة بمختلف عناصرها.
أمّا الفصول فهي عبارة عن أشكال تخطيطية، بأحجام متفاوتة، لتعليقات وملاحظات وأسئلة استكشافية – قد لا تكون عميقة كما ينبغي ولا مبرَّأة من الالتزام بالاعتبارات الوطنية كما يتصورها الكاتب- عن المنابع الداخلية للانهيار والحرب، بتعبيراتها السياسية ومقولاتها وأُطرها ومجمل علاقاتها المعرفية والنفسية، وهذا يشمل البنية الخام للانفعالات المسكوت عنها في الأغلب الأعم.
إلّا أن المنهج في الكتاب، إذا جاز لنا الحديث عن منهج من الأساس، لا يشكِّل قطعة واحدة متصلة ومتجانسة. فهو يتناوب بين التحليل التاريخي المقارن، والاستقراء المنطقي، والملاحظة الصحفية، إلى جانب التأمُّل الشخصي الذي يخالطه طيف خفيف من الغنائية السوداء في رثاء وطن مُضاع.
الاهتمام هنا لا يتعدَّى اليمن. الملاحظات والتعليقات كُتبَتْ على التخوم من المرجعيات الثقافية والأخلاقية المتعارضة، وعند نقاط التماس بين مناهج وتقاليد تنتمي إلى حقول معرفية ونقدية متعددة: فلسفة، وعلم اجتماع، وإناسة، وجغرافيا سياسية وبشرية، وتاريخ.
