قطع علم البلاغة أو الريطوريقا منذ نشوئه حتى اليوم مراحل عديدة متحولاً من علم جامع لعدة علوم كالشعر واللسانيات والفلسفة والمنطق والأسلوبية إلى علم مكرّس اليوم لتحليل الخطاب، يتخذ مناهج متعددة للقيام بذلك كالمنهج البراغماتي واللغوي أو الإدراكي أو التعبيري. واليوم علم الحجاج علم قائم بذاته يعرفه جورج فينيو على أنه "جزء من تلك البديهيات العامة التي يعتقد كلّ منا أنه يشترك فيها مع الآخر. كل إنسان يعرف ماذا تعني المناقشة، والدفاع عن وجهة نظره ومحاولة إقناع الآخر. وهكذا فإن المحاجة تعني بالنسبة لكل منا، وفي آنٍ معاً، الدفاع عن وجهة نظره وجعل الآخر يشاركنا فيها. وبكلمة أخرى اختيار الكلمات وبناء الخطاب بنيّة حمله على اعتناق أفكار معينة واتفاقات معينة. هذه الرغبة بالمشاركة جزء لا يتجزأ من كل حجاج، وبالتالي من كل كلام. فالمناظرة السياسية والدعاية التجارية والمحادثات العادية كلها تقوم على تلك الضرورة اليومية وهي تأكيد فكرة، تأكيد الذات وبالتالي خلق نطاق توافقي، بعد مواجهة خلافات أو إقصاءات من الطرفين." في هذا السياق يطمح هذا الكتاب إلى تبيان أن الحجاج "منهج عابر للعلوم" لا يمكن لأي خطاب سياسي أو ثقافي أو اقتصادي أو أدبي أو حتى يومي الاستغناء عنه، وذلك لكون كل خطاب يسعى من حيث المبدأ للتأثير على متلقيه. تركز هذه البحوث المنبثقة عن مؤتمر "الحجاج والمجتمع: من أجل حوار بنّاء وخطاب بلا عنف" من جهة على دور الحجاج في بناء مجتمع قائم على الحوار مع الآخر وفهمه وإدراك وقبول وجهات نظر أخرى مغايرة وأحياناً معاكسة لوجهة نظرنا دون إقصائها. ومن جهة أخرى ترصد البحوث كيفية تمييز الحجج المضللة التي تزخر بها خطابات عالمنا في وسائل الإعلام أو في مواقع التواصل الاجتماعي أو في أي سياق كان.
