تبحث هذه الدراسة في أسماء المناطق في إمارة دُبَيّ في دولة الإمارات العربية المتحدة، بهدف الوقوف على الظواهر الصوتيَّة والدِلاَلِيَّة لهذه المُسَمَّيَات، ومعرفة معانيها وأسباب تسمياتها، والربط بين معنى الكلمة في اللغة واللهجة.
وكان مِن أهم الدوافع إلى إعدادها البِرُّ بهذه الإمارة العريقة، وخدمتُها بدراسة أسماء مناطقها دراسة لغوية، ثُمَّ خِدمةً للدرس اللغوي في مجاله الاجتماعي، ذلك أنَّ العَلاقة بين اللغَة والمُجتمع مترابطة، وبينهما تلازمٌ يجعل كُلاًّ منهما ينمو بنمو الآخر، ويرقى برقيه، ويضعف بضعفه، فلا مجتَمَع بلا لُغة، ولا لغة بدون مجتمع.
وقد حرصتُ في هذه الرسالة على دراسة الأسماء دراسةً وصفية تحليليَّة مِن جوانبها الصوتيَّة والدِلاَلِيَّة، فالمستوى الصوتي يبحث في المفردة مِن حيث التغييرات الصوتية لكل من الأصوات والحَركات وأسباب ذلك، والمستوى الدلالي يبحث فيها الدلالات المعجمية، والإيحائية، والاجتماعية، وتطورها، ويبحث أيضا في أسباب التسمية، والربط بين المعنى اللغوي واللهجي.
