بحلول نهاية القرن التاسع عشر بدأت الأعراف والتعارف الأوروبية للجنون التى استقت أصولها من الطب النفسى الجديد فى التغلغل إلى البلاد نتيجة للتدخل الأوروبى لتحل محل الأعراف المحلية مؤدية إلى إحداث تغيرات فى تعريف الجنون وفى نظرة المجتمع للجنون وطرق التعامل معه. وهذه الورقة هى محاولة للتعرف على تأثير هذه الأعراف والتعارريف الأوروبية على نظرة المجتمع فى مصر للجنون وانعكاس ذلك على وضع النساء فى المجتمع سواء المريضات أو المعالجات هى محاولة لتلمس صوت الفرد المفعول به ومعرفة مقدار قبول أو رفض هذه الفكار الحداثية وبالتالى قدرة الفكار المحلية للصمود أمام تلك الفكار الوافدة.
