يشتمل هذا الكتاب على أحاديث مروية عن النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم، يتخللها أخبار عن المحدثين والشيوخ، وما يحدث معهم من طرائف، وما كانوا يروون من أخبار أدبية، وما ينشدون من مختارات شعرية، تستحق الرواية والإنشاد، وتزدان بروايتها المجالس فيها النكتة اللطيفة، واللمحة النادرة، يكشف السلفي لنا فيها عن جانب ثقافي رفيع، تحلى به بعض المحدثين والرواة المتمكنين المشهورين، أبانوا فيه عن سعة اطلاع، وشمول في الرواية، ساق السلفي بعضها بغرض الإحماض والنكتة، أو بغرض الغرابة في الإسناد، أو الندرة في المتن، إذ قل أن تجدها في كتاب، وربما تقرأ أخبارا جغرافية تتبين فيها تضاريس الأرض ومواقع البلدان، والمسافات بينها، ينحو ذلك نحو علماء الأخبار الذين حرصوا عليها أشد الحرص وتناقلوها بالرواية والتدوين، والضبط والإتقان. مع العلم أن هذا الكتاب من كتب التراث الأصيلة، التي يكشف عنها اللثام، وترى النور لأول مرة، قام المحققان بتحقيقها وتخريجها على نسخة فريدة وحيدة من مقتنيات المكتبة الظاهرية بدمشق (مكتبة الأسد).
