حرص كثر من علماء السلف والخلف، على جمع "أربعين حديثاً" من أحاديث الرسول الكريم، عملاً بحديثه الشريف صلى الله عليه وسلم: "من حفظ على أمتي أربعين حديثاً، بعث يوم القيامة فقهياً"، فتفننوا فيجمعها، حتى تعددت موضوعاتها وتباينت.
فمن العلماء من جمع "أربعين" في فضائل القرآن، وبعضهم في الطب النبوي، وبعضهم في أبواب علوم الدين، وبعضهم في فضائل النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم، وبعضهم في مناقب الصحابة رضي الله تعالى عنهم، وبعضهم في الزهد، وبعضهم في الأخلاق، وبعضهم في ترك الظلم، وبعضهم في الشهادة. وبعضهم في الشكر، وبعضهم في الدعاء، وبعضهم في فضل الخلفاء الأربعة. إلى غير ذلك من شتى الموضوعات الشريفة، ومقاصدها الحسنة، وسائر جوانبها الدينية والدنيوية المهمة.
ولما لم يقع أحد بجمع أسمائها على نطاق واسع، أو إفرادها بمؤلف مستقل، رأى "سهل العود" أن يشتغل باستقرائها حسب المستطاع، ويدونها في كتاب نفيس يكون في متناول أيدي العلماء والباحثين، والمشتغلين بالكتابة والتأليف وغيرهم. فجمعها بعد جهد منقباً عنها في الكتب والمصنفات، قديمها وحديثها، صغيرها، وكبيرها، ومتتبعاً ما طبع. فجاءت ما ينيف على (خمسمائة) كتاب، ما بين مخطوط ومطبوع.
وكان علمه في جمعها وترتيبها وخدمتها، على النحو التالي: أولاً: ذكر اسم الكتاب كاملاً، وإذا تعددت أمساؤه وأشرت إلى ذلك رفعاً للخلاف أو تنبيهاً إليه. ثانياً: ذكرت اسم المؤلف كاملاً، ثم أوردت له ترجمة مختصرة، كلما تيسر وجودها في المصادر والمراجع. ثالثاً: أشرت إلى الكتاب إن كان مطبوعاً أو مخطوطاً. رابعاً: وصف الكتاب بما يفصح عن فحواه، وأوردت أحياناً فقرة من مقدمته، وأحياناً أخرى استشهد بتعريف العلماء له، إن كتبوا عنه أو ذكروه.
وتعميماً للفائدة، صدر كتابه هذا بتعريف للأربعينات الحديثية، مع ذكر أنواعها، وسبب تأليف العلماء فيها، ونوه ببعض فوائد الـأليف فيها، كما تحدث عن أهمية العدد "أربعين"، ومن قام بجمع كتب الربعين، ثم ختم هذا التصدير ببيان أول من سبق إلى التصنيف فيها من العلماء.
